AT&T BlackJack II Mobile Phone – A Review

June 28th, 2010

They went back to the drawing board with BlackJack, which means that everyone can enjoy the fruits of those labors. No II has a bigger screen, more memory, powerful processor, better keyboard, GPS, Windows Mobile 6 and 2 mega-pixel camera. Last but not least – a larger battery.

Don’t think that the new design is without its problems though. There are sync problems and the speakerphone echoes, sounds garbled, muffled and indistinct.

BlackJack II comes in black or burgundy. The latter has textures on the back making it easy to hold. Burgundy makes a nice change from the usual mobile black (which always attracts fingerprints).

It’s a rather gorgeous executive-looking phone to say the least. Bigger than its predecessor because it has to allow for extra battery capacity – an enormous 1,700 mAh rated for 7 hours talk time and up to 14 days of standby. I foresee recharging just once a week.

The TFT non-touch screen has a high pixel resolution so text and images are sharp and effervescent. As with a normal PC, you can alter background, home page, menus, etc.

There’s a full QWERTY keyboard at the base of the screen with:

  • Function keys to hold down for alternate uses
  • Talk/End buttons
  • Home shortcut
  • Go Back button
  • Long press Talk key – activate speakerphone
  • Long press End key – lock mobile
  • Number keys
  • Quick-launch keys
  • Short-cut easily accessible buttons to Video, Camera, Messages and the Internet.

I don’t care very much for the navigator with center select key, but this can be used as a wheel for scrolling too, which is great. Personally, I prefer a side-mounted wheel but then you can’t have everything and I am happy with my phone.

I paid $150 for my BlackJack II which includes a long two year contract.

Poker Book Review: Omaha High-Low by Bill Boston

May 31st, 2010

I have often found myself in such a midst of bad luck and bad plays in NL (no limit) hold’em that I force myself to either switch sites, go to lower limits or take a clean break from playing. If the latter is as hard for you to do as it is me, then the solution may be a different game. Omaha High-Low is a different game from NL hold’em for sure, but the skills you have developed in hold’em can pay off much more consistently in Omaha Hi-Lo.

With the help of a book like Bill Boston’s Omaha High-Low, you can be proficient at this game in a matter of a few sessions. After reading this book, I started playing the 10 buck Omaha Hi-Lo sit and go tournaments at Party Poker, and with no experience at all had a 50% win rate after 12 games for a nice 220 profit. Well worth the 20 bucks for the book which had been in publication for years as in independently produced manual, but now picked up by Cardoza Publishing and presented in soft cover version.

Bill Boston used the very popular program called Turbo Omaha High Low Split by Wilson Software, testing numerous Omaha Hi-Lo hands against random flops. (Same programmers of the software called Turbo Texas Hold’em, used by Sklansky, Ferguson, Raymer among other pros) Combine this research with his years of experience in that game and this book makes for a solid foundation to profitable play.

What holdem players need to realize with this game, even with pot limit betting, is that it is generally not a bluffing game. So your good hands do pay off, especially when scooping the high and low hands. Boston stresses this throughout, and has played this way with success for years. This kind of strategic showdown play, could be a welcome relief for holdem players at their wits end, over getting pushed around. You really can’t do that in Omaha Hi-Lo, save for rare specific conditions being meant.

Unfortunately, Boston doesn’t get into poker tournament play with this book, mainly focusing on 10/20 ring games, which leaves a lot of explaining for us tournament players. On the good side, the hand analysis for strength will give any player the power of knowing when to get in a hand or not. This is truly vital information and will save you enormous amounts of stress, in effect avoiding tough decisions during the hand.

A good portion of this book is a table of values associated with each and every Omaha hand combination. It is quite scientific looking, but if you peruse through some of the hand combinations and look at how they can lose you money, it is very alarming. In this game, many hands you are dealt look good, but are simply money losers. This is what separates the winners from losers, amateurs from professionals. The ability to throw strong hands away is stressed here in the balance of knowing that even if you win, your pot is likely split several ways. Certainly a good read and if you combine it with Lou Krieger’s Poker Player’s Bible which has an extensive chapter on Omaha Hi-Lo, and you on your way to professional, profitable play.

Samsung Blackjack II Review

May 21st, 2010

The Samsung Blackjack II is the newest addition to the Samsung Blackjack series of smart phones. It looks almost exactly like the original Blackjack one but the truth is that there are some improvement in its hardware and operations. It comes with a 2.4 inch screen with a display resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. It has an improved keyboard placement, internal GPS, larger internal memory, and a 2.0 megapixel camera (which does not have auto focus or flash).

The Blackjack II has a standard rated talk time of around seven hours and maximum standby time is rated at fourteen days, which is quite impressive. With Bluetooth and USB connectivity, AOL, Yahoo, and Windows live chat options, the communication options are as good as having a laptop that fits in your hands.

Running on Windows Mobile 6 Standard, it supports editing of Microsoft Office documents, which may come in handy at times. With a web browser, and wireless internet connectivity, all the basic conveniences come within the palm of the hand. The Samsung Blackjack II comes with a microSD slot to add additional storage capacity to its 155MB internal memory.

For personal organization, the Samsung Blackjack II comes with a personal day planner, alarms, personal organization page, and of course call waiting and call forwarding. The built in TeleNav GPS system gets you where you need be on time so that all of your personal organization doesn’t go to waste. The GPS unit comes built in, but the service for its use comes with an additional charge.

With faster hardware specifications than its predecessor, the Samsung Blackjack II is easily capable of adding more applications than ever before. One of the more unique features is the song recognition application that comes with the music player, and also the support for AT&T music and video streaming services, which require a paid subscription.

Samsung Blackjack II has Bluetooth but does not come with Wi-Fi connectivity, which might be a consideration for some users.

Overall, the Samsung Blackjack II is capable of offering more features in a streamlined package that offers versatility for both business and personal application. It is an all around phone that is serviceable under almost any conditions with a large network to back up the applications and the service agreement. With a mid range cost, the Samsung Blackjack II is a good buy with ample functions to back it up as the choice for your versatile communication device that slips easily into your pocket.

Full Size Blackjack Table Review

May 17th, 2010

The Full Size Blackjack Table could be the best thing to use for your poker nights. This is because of the many features of the Full Size Blackjack Table such as the player positions, room for chips, cups, armrests, and much more.

Poker night is a lot of fun. You might invite everyone over for poker night and have it once a week or on a regular basis. Did you ever consider that your table was not the most comfortable place to play poker. Most tables are not comfortable and you all have to get up and take a rest, walk around, get something to drink and more. If you don’t have the most comfortable place to play for your poker nights you might consider a Full Size Blackjack Table.

The great thing about this is that it has built in positions for up to 7 players and even a dealer. You might find you can barely fit six of you around the table at home comfortably and you know some people can see others cards because they are too close together. Now you won’t’ have to worry about that. This table has plenty of space and there is not too much reaching to get to the dealer.

Another excellent feature about a Full Size Blackjack Table is that it has built in positions for the chips. Everyone will have a place for their own chips. They won’t be sitting too close to the other person or hard to tell whose chips are whose. This will also eliminate any problems associated with people thinking that someone took their chips. The dealer can now maintain the night of poker play and facilitate with all chips remaining in place.

Another cool thing about this is that it has built in drink holders for your cups, beer, or any other beverage. At home people cannot have drinks because the table is too small and it always seems that someone spills on the table to ruin the game in play. This forces the game to have to break and be interrupted so people can have a drink. Now they can drink at the table without worrying about ruining the game.

A Full Size Blackjack Table is the perfect solution for your poker night. These tables are foldable so you can put them in the garage until you are ready to play again. They won’t be in the way and the folding legs make them easy to put away for storage. The frame is wood and reinforced which makes it sturdy too.

There are many reasons you might consider a Full Size Blackjack Table. These reasons include being able to play with up to 7 players, not counting the dealer. Now you can invite everyone over without leaving someone out. There are built in cup holders, chip holders, armrests so the players are comfortable, and the table even folds up. Now you can make your poker night much more enjoyable when you have an excellent table to sit at.
