How to Have the Most Fun Playing Holdem Poker at Home

June 10th, 2010

Holdem poker is taking the country by storm as one of the most fun means of entertainment. It’s not a fad, but more of an awareness of a great way to have some fun.

While there’s a ton of instructional info on the web to give you all the strategies and tips for playing your best, I’d like to focus on ways of getting the most fun out of playing holdem at home. Our perspective is that holdem is simply fun to play. We’re not doing it as a means of income, but we’re playing for entertainment purposes. The competitive aspects of friendly poker are no different than you’d find in your weekend golf or tennis game.

It’s simply nothing more than having a great time with friends or family at home. So, let’s look at some of the things that can make it even more fun.

Create The Atmosphere…

The first way to enhance our fun is to create the proper atmosphere. No, we’re not going to build a room that will hold the World Series of Poker or the World Poker Tour. But, without a lot of trouble and not too much expense, we can create our own poker room environment.

Before we begin, I’ll state the obvious and suggest you get some high quality poker chips. Personally, I prefer medium heavy, clay poker chips. They’re more fun to play with, add to the game, and you can do all the neat chip riffles you see on TV that don’t work with cheap, plastic chips. Plus, they’re just cool.

Next, consider getting a poker table. While the dining room table may work, you can add greatly to your game by having a genuine holdem poker table. They come in all price ranges. You can get an inexpensive table-top that you simply put on top of whatever table you’re using. They have the look of a real table but at a fraction of the cost.

But, if you’re really into your poker and can justify the cost, there’s some beautiful looking poker tables that are a genuine piece of furniture. They are not only the best way to play, but they can be quite striking as furniture in a recreation room.

Now, if you’ve got a very nice table, how about adding a neat light above it? One that’s tailor made for playing cards. All kinds of choices from Tiffany lamps to poker lamps.

If you’re going to go all out for your game room, here’s a few ideas that really add that special touch.

-Jukebox

-Popcorn machine

-Dart game

-Electronic dart game

-Pinball machine

-Foosball

-Posters of poker champions or your favorite players

-Poker wall art

Neat Accessories…

If you want to dress up your game without spending a lot of money, here’s a few more ideas.

How about poker buttons to help the beginners? You can get a set of buttons which include the dealer button and one for the small and big blind. It can help remind beginners when they have to ante up and where the play begins.

Shoes for dealing cards and card shufflers are also inexpensive, but functional items as well. Or how about a deck of World Poker Tour playing cards. It’ll give you that “official” look.

You also might want to consider a chip case. Or get the entire chip set including a classy aluminum or wood case. If you have large games, you can buy packages that have as many chips as you’ll need. How many chips are needed is covered in another article or you can do a web search.

So, these are just a few ideas to help you have the absolute most fun from playing poker with your friends. Factor in the enjoyment factor and how much you’re willing to spend, then decide which of these ideas fit best into your entertainment plans.

How to Win Texas Hold’Em – Tips to Becoming a Better No-Limit Texas Hold’Em Player

April 19th, 2010

How to win at Texas Hold’em is a question often asked by many players during the course of playing the game throughout their life. Texas Hold’em is a game that can be learned in a fairly short time but normally takes lots of practice and playing time in order to truly master it at a winning level. Without question, one of the most important winning factors for any serious or professional Texas Hold’em player is the art of patience. Many losing players simply play to many hands while a majority of successful players (those that make money on a consistent basis) are selective in the starting hands they play. Having a better starting hand significantly improves your odds of winning the hand.

Another factor that sets good players apart from bad players is their ability to adjust to the players at their table. They normally focus in on the other players in order to get a read on their playing style. For example, loose players like to play lots of hands and can be difficult to bet out of a hand while tight players generally only stay in a hand when they have a monster or winning hand. Loose players generally also like to bluff at a lot of pots. You can sometimes get more information out of a loose player in order to get a better read on them by raising their bet or check raising them in order to watch and see how they react.

Many tight players will normally only play what is known as the “Nuts” or absolute winning hand early in a poker game. This allows you the opportunity to try stealing pots from them in later rounds by making a big bet. If you feel that they are also trying to steal a pot you can easily raise their initial bet in order to see where they really stand with their cards and just how powerful they feel their hand is in relation to your hand. Generally, a tight player will fold if they feel your hand is better but in the event they make a call (especially a quick call) then you can assume they have a good hand and should avoid staying in the pot with them.

Betting styles are also another indicator of how a person plays and should be watched throughout the game. For example, when the player bet did they have a made hand or were they chasing a flush or straight draw? When did they bet, on the pre-flop, on the flop, the turn or river? Are they slow playing any hands? These are the types of signs and tells you as a player must pick up on early in a poker tournament in order to use this information to your advantage in later rounds when they blinds go up and the antes start to kick in.

Pocket pairs are a nice way to start a round but it’s important you wait and see a flop. Especially, if you are out of position and your pocket pairs are in the lower range of something like pocket 9 and below. If your pocket pair can be everything on the flop then you should bet aggressively in order to see how the other players react. In the event an overcard to your pair comes out on the board and someone bets big you can rest assured that you are most likely beat and can fold your hand. Pocket pairs become more valuable when their is fewer players at the table so play them accordingly in that situation. Also, remember to always study the board in order to spot any likely draws that another player may have caught or be attempting to catch.

Another aspect of becoming a winning Texas Hold’Em player is mastering the art of the bluff. Bluffing is a huge part of poker and the better you become at bluffing and catching other players in a bluff the more pots you will win and the more money you will make as a poker player. I normally like to try and win one pot with a bluff every hour that I am involved in a poker game or tournament.

One final tip is to always keep your emotions in check. If you want to know how to win Texas Hold’em tournaments you must be able to avoid going on what is known as Tilt. Remember, everyone takes bad beats in poker, even the professional players. It’s just another aspect of the game that makes it so exciting and fun to play. If you feel yourself starting to lose your cool then simply step away from the game for a few minutes in order to cool down and gather your thoughts so you can refocus on paying your hands the right way.

Remember, always be patient and play solid starting hands. No-Limit Texas Hold’em is not a sprint to the finish line. Instead, it’s a game of skill that is more akin to a marathon and the ability to win a small pot is always better then losing a big pot.

Are you tired of reloading your poker account night after night? Are you tired of always finishing out of the money? Are you tired looking at your deposit/cashout history and just seeing all deposits? Well, it’s time to change all that and learn how to become a winning online poker player by understanding the fundamentals to winning at Texas Hold ‘Em

Texas Hold’em Poker Made Simple

April 10th, 2010

Texas hold’em poker is a type of game known as a “flop,” which combines elements of stud and draw poker. It is the most popular and challenging of the flop poker games. In Texas hold’em the players vie in each hand to win the pot–the total amount of the bets that the players have placed in the course of a hand. However, the goal of a strategic player is to win money, not to win pots–there is a small but crucial difference between the two.

A hand in Texas hold’em starts with each player being dealt two face-down cards, known as the pocket cards. After all the players have received their pocket cards, the dealer places additional cards face up on the table to make up the “board.” The cards on the board are community cards–meaning that they are available for any player to combine with their pocket cards to form a betting hand. There are three stages involved in dealing the board, though not every hand will go all the way to the last stage. In the first stage, after an initial round of betting, the dealer lays down three face-up cards–called the flop. After the second round of betting, the dealer lays down a fourth card, or the “turn.” Another round of betting follows, and then dealer lays down the last card, or the “river.” Then a final round of betting follows.

Players vie to win a pot by combining their pocket cards with some of the community cards on the board into the best possible hand that they can create. Hand creation is a science into itself, but let us just go into the basics. In Texas hold’em, no suit has a greater value than any other, and the Ace can be a high card or a low card, but when used as a single card or a kicker, it is always high. The hand rankings in Texas hold’em, in descending order, are as follows:

Straight Flush: Five cards of the same suit in sequential order. A royal straight flush is 10, J, Q, K, A and is the highest possible hand in the game.

Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank.

Full House: A combination of three of a kind and one pair in a single hand. For example, three 7s and two As.

Flush: Five cards of the same suit.

Straight: Five cards of different suits in sequential order.

Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank. (Also known as a set or trips.)

Two Pair: Two cards of one rank beside two cards of a different rank. For example: K, K, 9, 9. Two pair is always combined with a “kicker” (a fifth card that is not part of a pair).

Pair: Two cards of the same rank. For example, a pair of Queens.

High Card: A single card with the highest face value in your hand.

As more cards are laid on the board, the options for forming a hand often increase.

What Game Bots Like Blackjack Bots, Poker Bots And Holdem Bots Do For You

February 14th, 2010

First things first, game bots are not illegal but can in some cases be against the terms of service of gaming sites like online casinos and online poker rooms. There is no real reason why they should be against the TOS of online casinos as blackjack bots or roulette bots really do not give the player any significant advantage over the casino, except that they will play the game for you with no errors thus minimizing your losses, and allowing you to walk away with a fair chunk of the bonus (free money) or more.

For blackjack bots they will play the perfect basic strategy of the the blackjack game the online casino that you play offers. All you would need to do is set the playing parameters of the blackjack game that you are going to play. This includes the number of decks used, the number of times you can split cards and whether you can double on any card or only face cards or aces. These rules of the game of blackjack played will determine how much of an advantage you can have from the house and the game bot will adjust play automatically to yield the most advantage. Then you just press a button and it will play for you while you relax. The one I recommend in my biobox below, I have tested and it works very well. So well it seems that the casino I played it at (intercasino) have reduced the amount of bonus you can get each month. But it is still a profitable proposition, especially as you don’t do any work to get the bonus money.

Poker bots are a bit more tricky but also very profitable. Strictly speaking you are not allowed to use them as it gives you an unfair advantage over the other players so poker rooms bans use of them. This means if you get caught, your account will likely be banned or at least suspended. It is risky but the amount of people on poker rooms that use it is quite staggering. Poker bots range from holdem or omaha calculators that only basically give you a summary of how well your hand is doing against other players to full on cheating bots that claim they can read not only your hand but that of your opponents. Bots that make those claims are definetely illegal since do be able to read other player’s hands would entail hacking and that is illegal. But other holdem bots or omaha bots and poker bots in general work just like blackjack bots and play the best strategy given the hands that you hold. There are many variations of poker bots of which I also recommend below but in essence I would never recommend you set and forget poker bots because online poker is more dynamic and varied in its play than the more rigid game of blackjack or roulette. So if you plan to get a poker bots make sure you remember not to set and forget but keep monitoring or else you might get a nasty surprise when you log back into your online poker room.
