Simple Jacks or Better Strategy Tutorial

May 21st, 2010

Statistical Arbitrage strategy applied to Video Poker

Introduction

Jacks or Better is a popular video poker game available at many online casinos. When collecting casino matched deposit bonuses, it counts towards wagering requirements for most online casinos, has a high payout, and a large jackpot.

This article will show readers how to calculate and maximise their expected return when using Jacks or Better to clear Casino bonuses. In effect, this is a statistical arbitrage strategy similar to that used by Casinos to maintain a house edge against players.

Readers who do not already know how to play Jacks or Better are advised to read this tutorial [http://www.casino365.com/GameHelp.asp?doc=HELP_VIDEOPOKER1] covering the basics.

Simple Optimal Strategy

CSBS favours a simple Jacks or Better strategy as it allows a faster rate of play with minimal expected loss. 5 coins should be played per hand as this maximises the payout from a Royal Flush.

This simple strategy has a 99.46% payout. To use the it, find all the ways to play a possible hand from the list below, and select the one that is highest. A high card is one that is a Jack or better (i.e. Jack, Queen, King or Ace).

To execute the strategy, players simply play the initial hand that is highest in this list:

  1. Full house or better
  2. 4 to a royal flush
  3. Straight, three of a kind, or flush
  4. 4 to a straight flush
  5. Two pair
  6. High pair (i.e. pair of Jacks, Queens, Kings or Aces)
  7. 3 to a royal flush
  8. 4 to a flush
  9. Low pair (i.e. pair of Tens or lower)
  10. 4 to an outside straight
  11. 2 suited high cards
  12. 3 to a straight flush
  13. 2 unsuited high cards (if more than 2 pick then pick lowest 2)
  14. Suited 10/J, 10/Q, or 10/K
  15. One high card
  16. Discard everything

Expected Returns – Intercasino US Example

Before claiming any casino deposit bonuses, it is important to understand the terms and conditions, and any wagering requirements. As an example, we shall consider claiming the Intercasino US $90 monthly deposit bonus, and demonstrate how to calculate the expected return.

At time of writing, Intercasino US offer a $90 monthly deposit bonus. This means that playerss depositing $90 will receive a $90 bonus into their account. (Intercasino US credits this immediately upon deposit, but other casinos may act differently).

The terms and conditions state that players must wager an aggregate total of 25 times the bonus in the casino before they can withdraw the bonus money. For example, a player who deposits $90 and receives a $90 bonus must then wager an aggregate total of $2,250 before they can cash out.

A player using the Simple Strategy would expect a payout of 99.46% which is equivalent to a loss of 0.0054%. Therefore, if they wager the full $2,250 wager requirement they would expect a loss of $2,250 * 0.0054 = $12.15.

Since the player received a $90 deposit bonus, their expected profit is therefore – $90.00-$12.15 = $77.85.

Problems to consider

There are some additional considerations that players may want to consider before taking advantage of these bonuses. A few are listed here:

  • Neteller users must pay $1.00 to withdraw. This is an additional cost reducing the expected return to $76.85.
  • The expected return is only an estimate. Players are not guaranteed to win every month, though if they hit a Royal Flush then they could make a lot more than $77.85.
  • Some casinos will allow players to withdraw their deposits before they have even started working through the wager requirements. CSBS does not recommend this as it can lead to players being banned for abusing the promotions.

How to Win Texas Hold’Em – Tips to Becoming a Better No-Limit Texas Hold’Em Player

April 19th, 2010

How to win at Texas Hold’em is a question often asked by many players during the course of playing the game throughout their life. Texas Hold’em is a game that can be learned in a fairly short time but normally takes lots of practice and playing time in order to truly master it at a winning level. Without question, one of the most important winning factors for any serious or professional Texas Hold’em player is the art of patience. Many losing players simply play to many hands while a majority of successful players (those that make money on a consistent basis) are selective in the starting hands they play. Having a better starting hand significantly improves your odds of winning the hand.

Another factor that sets good players apart from bad players is their ability to adjust to the players at their table. They normally focus in on the other players in order to get a read on their playing style. For example, loose players like to play lots of hands and can be difficult to bet out of a hand while tight players generally only stay in a hand when they have a monster or winning hand. Loose players generally also like to bluff at a lot of pots. You can sometimes get more information out of a loose player in order to get a better read on them by raising their bet or check raising them in order to watch and see how they react.

Many tight players will normally only play what is known as the “Nuts” or absolute winning hand early in a poker game. This allows you the opportunity to try stealing pots from them in later rounds by making a big bet. If you feel that they are also trying to steal a pot you can easily raise their initial bet in order to see where they really stand with their cards and just how powerful they feel their hand is in relation to your hand. Generally, a tight player will fold if they feel your hand is better but in the event they make a call (especially a quick call) then you can assume they have a good hand and should avoid staying in the pot with them.

Betting styles are also another indicator of how a person plays and should be watched throughout the game. For example, when the player bet did they have a made hand or were they chasing a flush or straight draw? When did they bet, on the pre-flop, on the flop, the turn or river? Are they slow playing any hands? These are the types of signs and tells you as a player must pick up on early in a poker tournament in order to use this information to your advantage in later rounds when they blinds go up and the antes start to kick in.

Pocket pairs are a nice way to start a round but it’s important you wait and see a flop. Especially, if you are out of position and your pocket pairs are in the lower range of something like pocket 9 and below. If your pocket pair can be everything on the flop then you should bet aggressively in order to see how the other players react. In the event an overcard to your pair comes out on the board and someone bets big you can rest assured that you are most likely beat and can fold your hand. Pocket pairs become more valuable when their is fewer players at the table so play them accordingly in that situation. Also, remember to always study the board in order to spot any likely draws that another player may have caught or be attempting to catch.

Another aspect of becoming a winning Texas Hold’Em player is mastering the art of the bluff. Bluffing is a huge part of poker and the better you become at bluffing and catching other players in a bluff the more pots you will win and the more money you will make as a poker player. I normally like to try and win one pot with a bluff every hour that I am involved in a poker game or tournament.

One final tip is to always keep your emotions in check. If you want to know how to win Texas Hold’em tournaments you must be able to avoid going on what is known as Tilt. Remember, everyone takes bad beats in poker, even the professional players. It’s just another aspect of the game that makes it so exciting and fun to play. If you feel yourself starting to lose your cool then simply step away from the game for a few minutes in order to cool down and gather your thoughts so you can refocus on paying your hands the right way.

Remember, always be patient and play solid starting hands. No-Limit Texas Hold’em is not a sprint to the finish line. Instead, it’s a game of skill that is more akin to a marathon and the ability to win a small pot is always better then losing a big pot.

Are you tired of reloading your poker account night after night? Are you tired of always finishing out of the money? Are you tired looking at your deposit/cashout history and just seeing all deposits? Well, it’s time to change all that and learn how to become a winning online poker player by understanding the fundamentals to winning at Texas Hold ‘Em

Blackjack Or Poker – Which Has the Better House Edge?

April 17th, 2010

Blackjack and poker are two of the most popular games that you will see in any casino. There are even some players, like Andy Bloch and Erica Schoenberg, who have made the crossover from professional blackjack player to professional poker player. However, there are some very important differences between these two games and you need to know what they are if you are going to be successful at either one.

Blackjack vs. Poker: House Edge

Poker is played against other players, rather than the House, so technically there is no “House edge.” However, most poker rooms will take a rake, or a small percentage of each pot, as payment for running the game. Therefore whatever edge the player is able to generate through skill must be big enough to cover the rake. Blackjack, on the other hand, is played against the House, and therefore has a House edge, which, with correct use of basic strategy, is usually less than two percent.

Blackjack vs. Poker: Turning Pro

It is very difficult to be a blackjack pro, simply because the only way to do it is through counting cards or some other method of tracking certain cards in the deck. This is a skill that takes painstaking effort, especially if the shoe contains six decks or more, and requires many hours of play before you turn a serious profit, notwithstanding the way card counting is portrayed in the movies. Furthermore, counting online is impossible because the random number generator in the software makes it impossible to know how rich the deck is in tens at any given time. While becoming a poker pro is more difficult than it may look on T.V., your goal is simply to have an edge over the other players at the table, which is much easier than turning a game with a built-in two percent edge against you into one where the edge is in your favor.

Blackjack vs. Poker: Celebrity

If your goal is fame and fortune, blackjack is probably not for you. Professional blackjack players need to remain anonymous, because casinos can ban winning players from their casino whenever they want. On the other hand, people love to test their skills against successful poker players, so in this day and age, poker players can practice their skills right out front for everyone to see.

Tips for Playing Better Poker

April 4th, 2010

Poker has been gaining such popularity lately that many people are looking for the secrets of the pros to help them play a better game. Countless books and shows and web pages have been created to help people play better poker.

Whether you are playing at the casino or in a regular weekly game, you want to know the techniques that will make your game that much better.

There is one secret of the pros that is important for every poker player to know. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing Texas hold em’ on a televised celebrity match, or seven card stud in the casino, or five card draw with a bunch of buddies at your house. This is one of the main secrets that pros use:

· “Play tight.”

The term “playing tight” means that you should fold bad hands quickly and aggressively play good hands. If you have a bad hand, get out early. Don’t try to wait it out and hope that the cards will turn your way. They rarely do. However, if you have a good hand, stay in and bet high. Your high bets will drive out the weaker players and still raise the pot to make up for the small losses that chipped away at your pile of cash through the evening. In fact, a good player may only play a couple hands in an entire evening, but if they play tight they can still win.

So what is a good hand and what are other ways to help you play tight poker? It depends on the game you’re playing. Here are some suggestions, although these are just guidelines and not everyone will agree.

· If you are playing Texas Hold ‘em, stay in if you are dealt a good black jack hand on your two down. If not, get out.

· If you are playing five card stud, stay in if you are dealt a pair. You may want to stay in if you are dealt an Ace, but you’re taking a risk. Otherwise, get out.

· No matter how tempting it is, don’t hold out for a straight! If you’re trying to build a straight, fold because the chances are slim.

· If you are playing draw poker, keep the required amount plus a “kicker” card, which will throw off your opponents as to what you have. And you’ll be surprised at how often that kicker will help you win the pot.

· Don’t bluff. If you are great at bluffing, you may want to do it occasionally, but most people are terrible at it. What’s more, in many friendly games, people will pay to see if you’re bluffing because the stakes are low, so if you gain a reputation for never bluffing you will also gain a reputation for going big only when you have a good hand.

Online Blackjack Tips – How to Become a Better Player

February 28th, 2010

Online blackjack differs from live blackjack and the main reason for this is that when you are playing against an online computer generated dealer- you are basically playing against a random number generator. All the computer generated dealer does is simply replicate a deck of cards. And following every card delivery, the computer dealer proceeds to return all the cards to the deck and re-shuffles them, unlike a real dealer. Basically, no opportunity is afforded to use a card counting system.

To be successful at playing online blackjack, it is essential to fashion your own particular approach to the game and this should consist of two major elements. The first is the basic blackjack strategy to be employed and the second is the rules that will define the bet size.

Basic blackjack strategy is perfect for use both in live casinos and their online counterparts and the basis of this strategy are statistics. This basic blackjack strategy is practical for online use because as the computer dealer models ‘his’ decks on an actual deck of cards, all the probable outcomes remain the same throughout.

Finding descriptions of basic strategies is an easy process, as there are a plethora of resources available on the internet. These resources (just Google blackjack strategies), give detailed descriptions of each strategy with all the appropriate instructions on how to use them properly. Sit down and take the time to learn these new found strategies, making sure they become second nature because at the end of the day, the better you master a particular strategy, the more competent you will become, making it much easier to play the game of blackjack.

Once the different strategies have been mastered, or understood at least, the size of each particular bet to be laid has to be taken in to consideration. There are a huge number of different systems available that can help you determine which bet sizes should be laid for each particular strategy or game. There are two basic groups that a bet could be divided into. The first one is the anti- martingale system which means increasing bet size after a win, while reducing them after a loss. The second system is the Martingale system itself.

With the Martingale system, you are basically increasing the size of the bet to cover previous losses, so in actual fact you are doubling the bet size with each deal until you hit a winning hand. Once you hit a winner you then return to the initial bet value. Once you hit a winning hand you should return to the initial bet size for subsequent hands. In an anti-martingale system, you increase the rate after each win and decrease it after each loss, which means you could benefit from a winning streak while at the same time reduce losses while on a losing streak.

Most experts advocate against the use of the Martingale system for very obvious reasons and beginners would be much better off applying the anti-martingale system initially, and once proficient look for other betting strategies.
